While the primary role of our precious choppers is to chew food, healthy teeth and, more specifically, a beautiful smile play a much bigger role in our lives than that. According to experts, our smile says a great deal about us. It tells the world how outgoing and even intelligent we are. As such, with a million dollar smile, we have a bigger chance of professional success, forging more friendships and it even increases our chances of success in the romance department. In the world we live in, presentation and attitude are everything. We can have the most expensive clothes, the greatest hair and makeup looks, but if there is something left to be desired in the smile area, it all seems less than. So, in order to help you impress and dazzle the world with your killer smile instead of hiding it, we reveal some of the best secrets that will take the health and appearance of your choppers to a whole new level.

The general rules of thumb

One would think that by now everyone would be familiar with the rules of proper teeth and gum care, but some of us still need a refresher course. When you brush your teeth – which should be after every meal – take your time instead of using a forceful hand. When you brush too hard, you run the risk of irritating your gums, and causing receding gums and enamel wear, among other things. Hence, it’s vital to learn proper brushing techniques and use the right brush. Consult your dentist on the last one, as based on the state of your gums and the quality of your teeth, they will be able to tell you exactly which brush is perfect for you. Flossing is something we are generally lazy about and many of us skip this step, which a very bad idea. Flossing gets rid of all the little excess food particles that even the best toothbrushes can’t ‘hunt down’ so please, start using floss as of today and stick with it.

Postponing is not an option

A great number of people are scared of the dentist, some even have phobias. However, this is a fear you have to face if you want to preserve or even enhance your smile. For instance, Australians are known for their amazing smile, and while some owe that to good genes and regular visits to their dentist – for checkups as well as fixing any issues, others often inquire about the innovative Invisalign cost in Sydney in order to straighten their teeth and get that gorgeous even smile. Not all of us are born with perfectly straight teeth, so why not correct Mother Nature’s mistake if we have the technology for it? The best part about this procedure is that you don’t have to wear braces in order to correct your smile. If there are similar procedures in your country, make sure you scout them out as you can’t put a price in investing in your smile in this way.

The old-fashioned route

If this kind of procedure isn’t for you, you can always turn to traditional braces, just as an enormous amount of Americans do. The witty and insightful New York Magazine article colorfully depicts how Americans of all ages and walks of life react to having their braces removed, finally being able to rub their “tongue across suddenly slimy teeth”. The article goes to say that not only have Americans never been more obsessed with healthy and straight teeth, but that this same obsession has never been ‘more actionable’. It’s a good thing it’s so, because, apparently, ‘38 percent of Americans would rule out a second date with someone with misaligned teeth, and those with straight teeth are 38 percent more likely to be perceived as smart.’ They even place great teeth ahead of amazing skin, and that certainly says something. The number of people visiting their dentist on a regular basis has doubled in the last two decades. This only goes to prove that, a great smile really is a deal-sealer. So, follow both Americans and the Aussies, and find your best way to a straight smile.

If you were born with perfectly aligned teeth, or have done your due diligence to get them to that state, now is the time to talk about color. One of the oldest tricks in the book is brushing your teeth using activated charcoal. While there has been no official confirmation that it works, at least not from dentists or any medical journal, some people swear by it, while others claim it has done little to nothing for them. As opinions are divided, you are free to give it a go as it won’t cause any harm. If you see results, great, and if not, there is always your trusty dentist’s office, a place where you can safely whiten your teeth. Most dentist will tell you to avoid the popular whitening stripes and pens, so if you want a safely achieved pearly white smile, a professional is the one to put your trust in.

Yes, a great smile goes a long way, but it’s important that you don’t attempt to DIY your way to it. You wouldn’t treat any other health condition on your own, so why would your teeth be any less important and left to your own devices?

  • Great tips! I think we should see a dentist at least every six months, or three months if possible. Good oral health not only boosts self-confidence but it also reduces your risk for any oral-related illnesses, like tooth decay.
